Fairway woods have been around since the inception of golf. They weren’t always called fairway woods, the subset was called “grassed drivers” and furthermore, each fairway wood had it’s own name: a 2-wood was a “brassie,” a 3-wood was a “spoon,” and a 4-wood was a “wooden cleek.” You probably won’t find any originals from the 1500’s here, but you will find their modern counterparts made by the likes of XXIO, Adams, Cleveland, Nicklaus, Nike, and PXG among many others. And while I have a love for antiquity, these contemporary models will actually help your game.
