That's because they are suited to hit long distances from the rough when a fairway wood might be too long to feel like you could make solid contact on the face or when an iron might bite too hard into the turf when you attempt to strike the ball. Enter the hybrid, it's manageable enough to hit the ball out of the long stuff and still make the ball go a long way.
